Ham Radio Operator Speaks With Space Station

Ned Carroll’s amateur radio has connected him with people all over the globe, but now it’s given him an experience that’s out of this world.

Mr. Carroll spoke on Thursday with Anousheh Ansari, an Iranian-American space tourist aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

The small radio inside Mr. Carroll’s farmhouse, west of Davidson, Sask., was tuned to the space station’s frequency and picked up its signal at around noon. He heard a slightly accented woman’s voice coming through the speakers of his ham radio.

“I heard her say, ‘C-Q, C-Q, C-Q,’ and of course that means she wants to talk to someone, anyone who is listening,” Mr. Carroll said. “And I thought: What the heck, you can’t lose by trying.”

He rushed over to his radio, grabbed the microphone and said, “V-E-5-N-E-D,” his call sign, and anxiously awaited a response. He didn’t have to wait long, as the voice responded immediately, repeating, “This is R-S-0-I-S-F,” which is the Russian Space Station call sign, and then the voice revealed her name, “Anousheh Ansari.”

So every fall I have wanted to grow a crazy beard. I have either been: A) Talked out of it by a girlfriend. B.) Wussed out after about a month.

So this fall I think I may have what it takes. Last year I was encourged by Yewknee’s Wiskerino 2005. Which involves a bunch of guys all across the country doing what men to best, grow horrible facial hair.

Anyone who is self employed or has a cool boss, a understanding wife/girlfriend and wants to do this let me know.

P.S. No I am not vegan nor do I listen to hot water music, if I was/did I would have a beard already. Get with the program.

P.S.S. Beards will be followed by a week or two of really bad mustaches.

- Holy shit Ikea’s site for Garderoben is amazing. It’s a mix of Flash animation (swf) and beautiful video (flv). I would like to say we could do this, but I we don’t have the cameras and production management to pull this off. However we have the swf/flv skills. I’ve been pushing flv incorporation into flash sites to clients. See TwentyTwentySkateboards.com (we had poor video quality to start with) but that gives you an idea of how much more spark FLV (Flash Video) gives a site. Either way this Ikea site blows anything out of the water! I wanna do a pure video site now. Any takers?

San Diego investigative journalist John Mattes was attacked by a couple he was investigating: Make sure to watch both videos on the right hand side. Insane. This is amazing, how dumb can you be to attack the media on camera, threaten to kill them and have them killed in mexico. This video made me super mad.
